As I said in a previous post, I’m a big fan of the original Alien film. So I was pretty pumped when the trailers for Prometheus came out. After the opening weekend, from what I saw on social media, Prometheus received mixed reviews. On the movie message boards I read there were lots and back and forth arguing between those who liked it and hated it. Definitely snark filled arguments, but that is pretty standard for a big sci-fi release, so the negativity wasn’t going to steer me away. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as Alien, just wanted an entertaining movie. Luckily, in my opinion, Ridley Scott delivered.
The Good: Visually the movie is awesome. It’s rare when I recommend to see the 3D version of a film, but I think you should definitely see Prometheus in 3D if you can. The entire movie was shot in 3D so it wasn’t that bullshit post-production money grab 3D. The silicon storm scene was exceptionally well done. Directing wise, Scott hit it out of the park. I also thought it was well acted, which was no surprise with the talent in this cast.
The Bad: It’s not the greatest script in the world. From what I’ve read on the boards, many people have the same questions. This led to the writers addressing those issues in interviews. I think with better writing those questions could have been addressed on screen a little better. There were some scenes in the final third I didn’t love (but I did enjoy the final shot).
Overall I’d recommend Prometheus on the visuals alone. If you are a fan of the Alien series you have to see it, but I can’t guarantee you will like it. And for those that have seen it, here is a pretty handy chart on the species origins of Prometheus.
