When I told people I was moving to Austin, a couple of friends mentioned that I have to try Torchy’s Tacos. As luck would have it, my apartment it right by a Torchy’s Tacos, which of course made one of my friends in particular really jealous. Since it was hyped up so much, and even their sign says “DAMN GOOD TACOS”, I was excited to try them out. Their sign is correct, these are some damn good tacos. They have a unique and diverse menu, but you can customize any item, so there is something for everyone here. They really are some of the best tacos I’ve tried. There are so many taco stands and trucks I still need to try, just haven’t been motivated to since Torchy’s is practically next door.
Another classic Austin restaurant near me is Freddie’s Place. Freddie’s has a pretty large menu, but their speciality is “Waffles n’ Stuff”, which is 2 waffles along with your choice of fried chicken, chicken fried steak, pork chop or sausage. I just go for the classic Chicken n’ Waffles, and they are great. There weren’t too many places in Cincy that sold chicken n’ waffles, and man have I been missing out. It’s a combination that just works. Overall I enjoy the atmosphere here. I’ve seen reviews claiming poor service, but the service has been great during my visits. Although I haven’t ate on their outside patio (cause I’m a wuss that’s still adjusting to the Texas heat), it looks like a nice area and it is dog friendly like so many Austin places are. They also have solid happy hour specials.
