Downtown Houston Buildings

Yesterday I posted photos of the Downtown Houston skyline. Today I have photos of what the downtown buildings look like up-close from the downtown streets. One thing I found interesting about walking around downtown there was hardly anone else walking around downtown. That is because most of the downtown buildings are connected by an underground tunnel system, which also has a variety of food and retail shops. So you don’t have the hustle and bustle on the streets like you do in most major city downtowns. This underground system makes sense due to the brutal heat and humidity in Houston. I would describe the tunnels as a skywalk combined with an airport terminal. Even though I sweated like crazy on the streets, it was nice to walk around and take pictures and not have to deal with crowded sidewalks.

Downtown Houston skyline

Houston has one of the biggest skyline’s in the country. I didn’t quite realize how large of a skyline this city had until I visited. So many skyscrapers, I was really impressed. I decided to take my camera out to the Sabine Street bridge and the 60th floor of the JPMorgan Chase building to get some shots of the skyline. Tomorrow I’ll post some shots of what the downtown buildings look like from the downtown streets.

Via 313 Pizza

The East 6th neighborhood is one of my favorite places to hang out in Austin. There is a nice collection of bars and the 6th and Waller food park is great. Across the street from that food park is Via 313 Pizza. This is another food trailer and is located adjacent to the Violet Crown Social Club.

One recent night during bar hopping along E. 6th I was in a pizza mood. I’ve already had and enjoyed Spartan Pizza in the Waller food park a week earlier, so this time I decided to try Via 313. Their specialty is Detroit style pizza, which is a square shaped, thick and crispy crusted pizza and the sauce is on top.

This would be the first true Detroit style I’ve tried. I don’t know if all Detroit style pizza is this good, but if so, I have been missing out. Overall this was the best pizza I’ve had so far in Austin. I really enjoyed the crust which was appropriately thick and chewy in the middle and had a great crispiness on the outer edges. The cheese and pepperoni was also tasty. Via 313 Pizza will now be an actual destination for me instead of just a pit stop during a night out on East 6th.
